about

*Cover Art by Sam Keshishian*
Each track on “Place” is named after an individual place around the town of Brunswick, Maine and includes as background ambience a field recording from each location. Upon traveling to Brunswick in June of 2017, I brought only my viola, mandolin and a single microphone and with these elements I recorded the four tracks for this EP. I found that learning to be still and appreciate small, simple moments in overlooked and insignificant places was very fulfilling psychologically and reflective of where I wanted to go musically. To record the background ambience for each track I traveled to an small boat ramp on the Atlantic coast south of Brunswick, Simpson’s Point. A no-name piece of stone obscured in the forest, Monument E. A small strip of Maine Street in Brunswick which I observed while rain fell. A playground in the morning adjacent to South Street by Bowdoin College.

Much of the music here reflects a certain state of mental and emotional wandering and searching. When I recorded each of these tracks I was almost a therapeutic experience. I stripped away a lot of my usual crutches; no click-track was used in any piece. I embraced any imperfections, using them as part of the experience of exploring and finessing the sound. Two of the tracks are nearly all improvised - I would lay down an improvised melodic line and then add many layers on top of the original line to create textures and atmospheres with really no goal in mind but to simply allow the sound to consume and envelope the listener. The other two tracks are more controlled with set chord progressions but are still very improvisational in nature when it comes to accompanying lines and many sections of the melody.

The other difference in this EP to my previous music is that it was my first time recording on acoustic instruments and really taking them seriously. I would move the mic very close to the instrument, so much so that my breathing can be heard in some sections. I fell in love with the idea of adding more organic elements so that the listener feels a true connection with the performer. The resonance and the depth of the viola was also captured very well and I quickly learned how handicapping an electric violin can be from a sound perspective after recording with one for several years. Electric instruments still have their uses and strengths, however.
