about

“Fold” is primarily an experiment in sound and emotion. The artistic goals of the project were more felt than known concretely. I intended to explore textures and colors I hadn’t heard before, keeping other musical components simple so that I could focus on crafting a sound that I enjoyed and I thought others would enjoy. In examining these new sounds however, I had to also more closely examine myself.

There were some changes to my approach with this work. leaned heavily on samples that I could only record in studio. Whereas before I relied on an 808 to reinforce the beat, this time I recorded on my own percussion instruments. Some of these weren’t even instruments at all. At one point I used a book, my own hands, a pair of pants, a stone dinner plate, and an old coca cola bottle. I would either sample these or record entire sections of the music, often having to do several takes on different instruments (or objects) or double different sections to reach the desired sound. Of course, synthesized sounds or samples are still present on some tracks. Another change from my previous work, specifically my previous EP, “Boreal”, was the mixture of acoustic and electronic elements. Whereas with “Boreal” I used entirely electric violin, (plucking, bowing, etc. for 30+ different parts) I used the electric violin only selectively on “Fold” and tried to use an ample amount of the acoustic viola, specifically for the lyrical, melodic sections. Along with the viola I used a new and rather unusual instrument for the track “Habitat”: a thin, 3 stringed instrument of appalachian origin sold in New York City in the 1980s by an instrument maker. This did make things more complex, with some tracks on the release having around 60+ parts.

The following poem was the inspiration for the title of the release:

Pied Beauty
By Gerard Manley Hopkins

Glory be to God for dappled things –
For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow;
For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;
Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches’ wings;
Landscape plotted and pieced – fold, fallow, and plough;
And áll trádes, their gear and tackle and trim.

All things counter, original, spare, strange;
Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?)
With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;
He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change:
Praise him.

Today his music seeks to reimagine string instruments through the lens of popular music production. Most of his releases consist of up to 70 tracks of recorded string instruments arranged in patterns normally associated with the electronic genre. ... more
